Recently a thought has come to my mind that I’d like to share with you. You know sometimes writing is about telling others what you think, believe and know. And other times it is about processing your thoughts and sharing them with others to see what new things you can learn.
So here is my thought: I, we, all of us are called to live a Big AND Little life.
Now, it is not uncommon to hear people these days talk about living a big life. Phrases like, “Go BIG or go home” or “I want to do life BIG” resonate within me. These thoughts tug on the dreamer, visionary and entrepreneur that I am and challenge me to think, believe and hope for bigger and greater things. Yet I know it to be a fact that living bigger is not always better.
Which brings us to the little side of life. Some of the greatest aspects of life are not in big crowds or with any big and fancy trappings, but in the presence of one good friend or alone with God in prayer. At times we are called to focus on aspects of life that are more intimate and interpersonal than large and in charge.
In my book Born to Grow, I speak of how Jesus had such an extraordinary Big AND Little life:
One minute He is the center of attention with crowds of people hovering over Him, and the next minute He is by Himself in nature, that is until the crowds found out where He went! Jesus was one moment like a rock star on stage and the next moment like a monk in hiding. (Born to Grow)
I just love the type of Big AND Little life Jesus lived! He had a vision to impact the entire planet yet hung out with 12 and more regularly only three guys. He spoke to people by the thousands and yet made time for one woman who drew water from a well. Man, do I love Jesus!
So, what do you think about the idea of living a BIG and little life? What parts of your life do you want to be BIG and what parts little?
