Naked Before God

Perfect Love Casts Out All Fear

The Apostle John wrote these words to the early church and for us today,

“And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love; and he that dwells in love dwells in God, and God in him. In this our love is made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear: because fear has to do with punishment. He that fears is not made perfect in love. We love him, because he first loved us.” (1 John 4:16-19)

God’s love for the believer is so great that on the day of judgment before God we will have absolutely no fear! His perfect love will banish all sense of fear and torment. We will be able to stand naked before God, known as we really are, and yet have no fear of his judgment or condemnation. God’s love demonstrated to us through the death of his Son Jesus is greater than all the fears we could ever muster up. God’s love will not fail! (1 Corinthians 13:8)

Christians will not only be able to stand before God without fear, we will be able to do so with boldness. The Greek word translated to boldness (or confidence) in our English Bibles means, “freedom in speaking, unreservedness in speech, openly, frankly, i.e without concealment, without ambiguity or circumlocution, without the use of figures and comparisons, free and fearless confidence, cheerful courage, boldness” (Strong’s Number: 3954, parrhsiva)

The Good News Just Became Great!

John also stated, “because as he is, so are we in this world.” In other words, since we are already found in Christ, we have the same privilege and incredible honor to come boldly before God now, on this side of heaven to petition Him with our requests. Consider some of these promises that use the same Greek word for boldness mentioned above.

“For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:15-16)

“Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.” (Hebrews 10:19-22)

“And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, he hears us: And if we know that he hear us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.” (1 John 5:14, 15)

We can stand before God at all times, no matter what our spiritual condition, and God will listen to us because His love and the blood of His Son have been shed to cover all of our sin. Even when we sin and feel condemned we can come to God because His love is greater than our condemnation.

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1: 8, 9)

For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. (1 John 3:21, 22)

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. (Romans 8:1)

God loves us so much that He gave His only Son to die on the cross for our sins, not just so we could go to heaven, but so we could also have boldness before Him today. (Romans 8:32) We can be open and vulnerable before God without fear because His love is greater than our worst sins. What an awesome privilege and a high calling to have such access to God! Let’s make the most of our relationship with Him and spread the Word of His unfailing love. Amen.
