Many Christians walk around with the idea that God is mad at them. If you have ever felt like God was upset and angry with you, you are not alone. In fact, it is one of Satan’s favorite lies to whisper to believers in Christ.

The heart of the gospel is God’s love, not his anger.  Jesus taught, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”(John 3:16) It was not God’s anger that compelled him to send his son Jesus to this earth or to the cross.  It was the love of God that motivated him to allow Jesus to die on the cross for our sins.

Let’s be straight. God takes no pleasure in sin.  Sin is a serious issue with God.  If sin were not a serious issue, God would not have required such a painful and radical sacrifice from his only begotten son Jesus.

The devil wants us to think, “God is angry with me.”  The truth is that God is angry with sin.  Do you see the difference?  God despises your sin, but God loves you.  One of the reasons God despises sin is because he knows how destructive it is to our relationships with him, others, and even with ourselves.  Being a Good Father, he wants to keep us from relational destruction as well as self-destruction.  For this reason, God hates sin.

Satan, the father of lies, wants us to believe that God is angry with us because he knows it will keep us from drawing close to the Father.  When was the last time you had the urge to be around someone who was angry with you?  God’s anger is against sin, and he has demonstrated that anger by allowing Jesus to be punished for your sins and mine.  Now we can receive God’s love without fear of penalty or judgment because Jesus has taken care of our sin debt on the cross.

So get this straight! God is not angry with you.  God really loves you.  Make this a declaration today: “God is not angry with me.  God loves me.”  Say it in the shower.  Speak it out while you’re driving around town.  Tell it to yourself until you believe it with your whole heart: “God is not angry with me.  God loves me.”

And the next time you hear the little whisper inside your head that says “God is angry with you”, remember this truth – Jesus took all of God’s anger against sin upon himself and now we are set free! The cross of Jesus makes one thing very clear; God truly loves you! “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”(Romans 5:8)
